PETE and HETE Standards Revision

SHAPE America is proud to champion and safeguard the national standards for Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) and Health Education Teacher Education (HETE). These standards are designed to develop preservice candidates into competent and capable future professionals.

In spring 2025, SHAPE America began soliciting feedback in advance of the revision process for both the 2017 National Standards and Guidelines for Physical Education Teacher Education and the 2018 National Standards for Initial Health Education Teacher Education.

In early summer, we began collecting recommendations for task force members who will guide the revision process. Following guidance from the SHAPE America Professional Preparation Council, the selection committee reviewed all applicants to ensure representation from a broad range of perspectives, geographic regions and experiences.

Below is the full list of members for each task force.

Standards Revision Process

Starting in fall 2025, members of each task force will work collaboratively to:

  • Review and analyze current research, best practices and trends in teacher preparation;
  • Address the evolving needs of today’s teacher candidates;
  • Draft updated national standards for PETE and for HETE;
  • Facilitate consensus-building by engaging a wide range of professionals and public stakeholders.

Updates on the standards revision process — including details about the first round of Public Review & Comment — will be shared here and through SHAPE America communications channels.
